Les Champs Gains climbs the upper part of the Chassagne-Montrachet slope, well above the village on thin soils over broken limestone. The altitude and the shallow ground make for one of the leanest and most mineral premier crus in the commune, a wine of nerve and cut that tends to need a year or two to unfold.
Citrus zest, green apple and white blossom lead the aromatics, with wet stone and a fine dusting of toasted almond underneath. The palate is taut and linear, with a firm acid backbone, a chalky, almost gritty texture and a long, saline finish.
Marc-Antonin Blain founded his estate in Chassagne-Montrachet in 2009 on family vineyards that trace back to 1683, handed to him by his grandfather shortly before his death. He is the son of Jean-Marc Blain and Claudine Gagnard, and the wines carry the same preference for clarity over weight that runs through the family.
