Domaine Louis Michel & Fils is one of the historic families of Chablis, working a 25-hectare estate established in the mid-nineteenth century. Under Guillaume Michel the house pioneered the all-stainless-steel style of Chablis in the 1980s, and continues to vinify and age every wine without oak so that the Kimmeridgian limestone of the appellation comes through unfiltered.
Montmains is a Premier Cru on the left bank of the Serein, sitting on the cooler side of the valley. Old Chardonnay vines planted on Kimmeridgian limestone and clay soils give a chiselled, mineral-driven style with bright acidity and a long, chalky finish. Hand-harvested fruit is gently pressed and fermented on indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel.
The 2023 opens with citrus, white flowers and crushed stone over a faint saline lift, with a touch of dried flowers in the background. The palate is dry and precise, with vibrant acidity, layered citrus fruit and a firm mineral backbone leading to a long, clean finish. Classic Premier Cru Chablis built for the medium term.
