Les Combettes is the smallest of Domaine Leflaive's Puligny-Montrachet holdings: a single parcel of just 0.73 hectares, planted to Chardonnay in 1963 and 1972. The climat sits on the northern edge of the appellation at the same altitude as Bâtard-Montrachet, looking across the boundary to Meursault's Premier Cru Charmes. Its southeast-facing clay-limestone soils produce a wine that pairs the generosity of Meursault with the minerality and poise of Puligny.
The Leflaive family has lived in Puligny-Montrachet since 1717, and the domaine in its present form was assembled by Joseph Leflaive between 1910 and 1930. Its vineyards are farmed biodynamically, certified by Biodyvin since 1998, and every bunch is picked and sorted by hand.
The 2022 vintage turned out to be an excellent surprise across Burgundy, delivering both quantity and quality. A hot summer, with heatwaves in July and again in early August, gave way to milder weather and light rain from mid-August that allowed the grapes to finish ripening evenly. Picking began on 25 August. After a long, gentle pneumatic pressing, the wine was fermented in oak casks, around a quarter of them new, and spent 12 months in barrel followed by six months in tank before bottling.
Expect a layered, textural Puligny with ripe orchard fruit, citrus and a long, stony finish, built to reward patient cellaring.
