Domaine Leflaive owns more than 85 percent of the Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Clavoillon, and only one other family vinifies wine from it, making this cuvée the benchmark for the climat. The vineyard lies just north of Les Pucelles at around 225 metres, facing southeast on clay-limestone soils. It was planted to Pinot Noir for centuries before phylloxera and only replanted to Chardonnay in the early twentieth century; the domaine's vines here date from 1959 through to 1988.
The Leflaive family has been rooted in Puligny since 1717, with the modern domaine built up by Joseph Leflaive between 1910 and 1930. The estate is farmed biodynamically, certified by Biodyvin since 1998, and harvested entirely by hand.
2023 was a generous vintage of balanced quality. A mild, dry winter and a cool, wet spring replenished water reserves, flowering went smoothly, and a short July heatwave passed without damage. A final burst of heat in mid-August pushed ripening along quickly, and picking began on 29 August. For the first time, the team stopped harvesting at 2pm each day to keep the fruit cool. The wine was fermented in oak casks, 22 percent new, and aged for 12 months in barrel and a further six months in tank.
Clavoillon is a fresh, precise expression of Puligny, with white orchard fruit, citrus and floral notes over a chalky, saline core.
