Bâtard-Montrachet lies directly below Le Montrachet, straddling the boundary between Puligny and Chassagne on deeper, heavier soils than the vineyard above it. That extra clay is what gives Bâtard its reputation as the broadest and most powerful member of the Montrachet family, a grand cru of muscle and breadth rather than the ethereal precision of its neighbours.
The nose is rich and layered, with ripe pear, yellow peach and citrus confit over almond paste, honey and a deep mineral base. The palate is dense and mouth-filling, generous through the middle but held together by a firm spine of acidity, and the finish is very long and gently smoky. It is a wine that needs years in bottle to resolve.
Domaine Blain-Gagnard was formed in 1980 when Jean-Marc Blain, a Sancerrois, married Claudine Gagnard, youngest daughter of Jacques and Marie-Josèphe Gagnard of Domaine Gagnard-Delagrange. The couple met studying oenology in Dijon, and they now farm around eight hectares in Chassagne-Montrachet with their son Marc-Antonin, holdings that include parcels in three grands crus.
