Les Butteaux is a lieu-dit within the Montmains premier cru on the left bank of the Serein, where the soils carry noticeably more clay than the right bank slopes opposite. That heavier ground slows everything down, giving a firmer, more structured Chablis that takes its time and rewards patience more than most premier crus in the appellation.
Aromas of lemon, greengage and white blossom sit over a savoury note of crushed stone and struck flint. The palate is tightly wound and quite serious, with real grip through the middle, a chalky mineral texture and a long, dry, faintly smoky finish that broadens out with air.
The Laroche story starts in 1850 with a vineyard worker buying his first plot of land, and its heart is the Obédiencerie in the centre of Chablis, a former monastery whose earliest foundations date from the ninth century. Wine has been made and aged on the site for roughly a thousand years.
