Domaine Henri Germain et Fils is best known for its sublime Meursault whites, yet its small range of reds is no less considered. Founded in 1973 and now led by Jean-Francois Germain alongside his daughter Lucie, the estate works its vines by hand with low yields and a gentle touch in the cellar. The Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge comes from gently sloped vineyards on deep clay and limestone soils near Santenay, some of the vines first planted in the 1960s.
Made from Pinot Noir, this is a red of finesse and perfume rather than power. Sweet red berry and plum fruit is lifted by gentle spice and a touch of orange peel, while the palate is medium-bodied and lively, with a generous core of fruit, melting tannins and a long, faintly saline finish. Fermentations are slow and natural, with restrained oak letting the fruit speak.
A versatile match for roast duck, mushroom dishes, charcuterie or roast pork. Serve at cool room temperature, and decant briefly if drinking young.
