Domaine Henri Germain et Fils is a small, family-run estate based in Meursault, founded in 1973 and today run by Henri's son Jean-Francois Germain. It is celebrated for some of the finest white Burgundy made in the Cote, the result of low yields, hand work in the vineyards and a deliberately minimalist hand in the cellar, with restrained use of new oak and wines often bottled unfined and unfiltered.
This Bourgogne Aligote is drawn from old vines in Meursault, picked late to capture full ripeness. Aligote shines here as a bright, mineral white showing green apple, lemon and white flowers, with a touch of crushed stone and a saline edge. A short period in barrel and tank adds a gentle roundness, but the wine stays taut, fresh and energetic from start to finish.
Serve well chilled as an aperitif or alongside oysters, fresh seafood, goat's cheese or a simple roast chicken. It is also the traditional base for a Kir when blended with a little creme de cassis.
