Domaine Henri Germain et Fils is a small, highly regarded estate based in Meursault, run by Jean-Francois Germain. While the domaine is best known for its precise white Burgundies, it also tends a parcel of Beaune Premier Cru Les Bressandes, a steeply sloping vineyard at the northern edge of the Beaune appellation in the Cote de Beaune. The fruit is farmed traditionally with low yields and hand work in the vines, and the reds are made with restraint, seeing only a modest proportion of new oak and typically bottled without fining or filtration.
Made from Pinot Noir, this is a charming and elegant expression of Beaune. Expect aromas of red berry compote, rose petal and orange rind lifting from the glass, leading to a supple, seamless palate. The tannins are fine and melting, the fruit pure, and the finish carries a gentle mineral cut that keeps everything fresh and poised.
Serve at cool room temperature and consider decanting a young bottle. It pairs beautifully with roast duck, coq au vin, mushroom dishes and soft washed-rind cheeses, or simply a roast chicken with herbs.
