Le Chavigne is the core expression of Pierreclos, the Mâconnais village where this domaine is based, and it is the wine that sets the reference point for everything else in the range. The vines sit on the limestone slopes above the village, and the wine shows why Guffens has spent four decades insisting that the Mâconnais can produce Chardonnay every bit as serious as the Côte d'Or.
The nose is pure and precise, with lemon, white peach and acacia over a fine note of crushed stone and toasted almond. The palate is concentrated and beautifully defined, with generous fruit carried on a firm acid line, a chalky texture through the middle and a long, mineral finish.
