Domaine Faiveley has been at Nuits-Saint-Georges since 1825 and is now led by the seventh generation, Erwan and Eve Faiveley. Clos Rochette has been a domaine monopole since 1933, meaning the family owns the entire walled parcel, and for those who know the estate well it has long been the signature white in the range.
The name comes from the ground itself, a hardpan scattered with small rocks and pebbles that is notoriously difficult to plough, with vines going back to 1960. That poor, stony soil gives a Chardonnay of unusual precision for the Côte Chalonnaise, with citrus and white orchard fruit, a fine thread of hazelnut and a taut, stony finish.
Serve it with scallops, roast chicken, poultry in cream sauces or a plate of soft cheeses. Good young, and better still with a few years in the cellar.
