Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe is one of the defining estates of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with the Brunier family having farmed the high plateau of La Crau since the late nineteenth century. La Crau is celebrated for its galets roulés, the smooth round stones that blanket the vineyard, retaining heat during the day and reflecting it back to the vines well into the cool Mistral-swept nights.
This is the estate's flagship red, a Grenache-led blend with Mourvèdre, Syrah and Cinsault, drawn entirely from the family's holdings on the La Crau plateau. Fermentation is conducted in concrete and stainless steel with extended maceration, followed by élevage across large foudres and casks to preserve fruit lift and the spicy garrigue character of the site.
Aromatically the wine shows crushed violet, lavender, raspberry, dark cherry, garrigue herbs, leather and a dusting of white pepper. The palate is full bodied and layered, framed by velvety tannins and lively acidity, finishing with the salty, stony cut that marks the best wines of the Crau.
