Château Clinet Pomerol 2019 750ml

Château Clinet sits near the centre of the Pomerol plateau, close to the village church and neighbouring some of the most famous names in the appellation. Its vines average around forty years of age on a soil of clay with a layer of gravel over an iron rich subsoil, the celebrated crasse de fer that gives Pomerol its savoury signature.

Merlot dominates the blend at roughly 85 per cent, filled out with Cabernet Sauvignon and a little Cabernet Franc. Extraction is handled gently and the wine is matured for around sixteen months in French oak, a little over half of it new, a step back from the more forceful oak regime of earlier decades.

The result is plush yet defined. Dark plum, black cherry and blueberry come with violets, truffle, cocoa and a distinct iron and graphite note, and the tannins are velvety and long. It is enjoyable after five or six years and holds well for twenty.
