The Clos de la Chapelle is a walled monopole within the great Chassagne-Montrachet premier cru of Morgeot, and its history runs deep. Vines were first planted on the site around 1150 by the monks who founded the Morgeot Priory and later the Cistercian Abbey of Morgeot. The chapel walls that give the clos its name still stand.
Domaine de la Vougeraie acquired the monopole from the Duchesse de Magenta, so the number of releases from it under this label remains very small. Being sole owner of an enclosed parcel means the domaine controls every decision within those walls, from pruning through to bottling.
The wine has the tension and purity that mark out the best of Chassagne. Restrained aromatics of citrus, grapefruit, struck match, lanolin, wet stone and chalk, and a mid weighted palate carried on bright acidity with real mineral vibrancy through a long finish. The domaine is based at Premeaux, just south of Nuits-Saint-Georges, was established in 1999, and farms biodynamically. Serve with lobster, scallops, poultry in cream sauce or a fine hard cheese.
