The Clos des Soixante Ouvrées is Volnay's most famous monopole, a walled 2.39 hectare parcel at the top of Les Caillerets held exclusively by this domaine. It sits on limestone marl with a south-east aspect near the Meursault boundary, planted with vines dating from the 1950s and the 1980s, and it has long been regarded as one of the most complete premier crus on the Côte de Beaune.
The nose is finely perfumed, with red cherry, raspberry and violet over a cool mineral note and a light savoury spice. The palate is silky and mineral-driven, medium bodied with beautifully fine tannins and remarkable persistence, closing long, fresh and stony. It drinks well young and ages for a long time.
Domaine de la Pousse d'Or works three monopoles in Volnay, the Clos des Soixante Ouvrées, the Clos de la Bousse d'Or and the Clos d'Audignac, across roughly 17 hectares that also take in Chambolle-Musigny, Corton, Pommard, Puligny-Montrachet, Morey-Saint-Denis and Santenay. Patrick Landanger bought the estate in 1997 and spent the following decades adding to those Volnay foundations.
