Le Bateau is a single parcel of just 0.14 hectares in Cramant, mostly south facing, on the classic chalky terroir that made the village a grand cru. It is widely held to be one of the finest lieux-dits in Cramant, and the vines Adrien Dhondt works here are the oldest on the estate, planted in 1951 by his great grandfather.
Those old vines and that pure chalk give a Blanc de Blancs of remarkable depth and precision. The nose is layered and slow to unfold, with white peach, lemon zest, brioche, toasted hazelnut and a striking crushed chalk minerality. The palate is broad but taut, with a fine, insistent mousse and the extra brut finish leaving everything dry, saline and very long.
Champagne Dhondt-Grellet was founded in 1986 at Flavigny, just outside Avize, when Eric Dhondt and Edith Grellet began bottling their own wines. Their son Adrien now runs the house and was named Winemaker of the Year in the 2017 Trophees Champenois. Serve it in a white wine glass, not too cold, with oysters, langoustine, roast chicken or aged hard cheese.
