Clarence House sits on the north-east facing slopes of Clarence Plains, just outside Hobart, around a Georgian homestead built in 1830. Owner Dr David Kilpatrick planted the first vines here in 1998, and today the vineyard is farmed without synthetic sprays. The wines are made by the respected team of Anna Pooley and Justin Bubb.
The Estate Chardonnay comes entirely from a single east-facing block planted to three Chardonnay clones, including the Penfolds clone. The 2024 was made by Anna Pooley, with oak used to add texture and complexity rather than dominate the fruit.
Citrus and stone fruit lead the way, tempered by oak, cereal and spice notes. The medium-bodied palate is elegant and seamless, with a refreshing, persistent finish that shows the poise of cool-climate southern Tasmanian Chardonnay. Enjoy it with seafood, roast chicken or soft cheeses.
