Château Rieussec is a Premier Cru Classé of Sauternes from the 1855 Classification, its vineyard on high ground at Fargues, directly adjoining Château d'Yquem. The property has belonged to Domaines Barons de Rothschild, owners of Lafite, since 1984.
Sémillon dominates the plantings at around 80 per cent, with Sauvignon Blanc and a touch of Muscadelle. The fruit is picked in successive passes through the vineyard, selecting only berries shrivelled by noble rot, and the wine is then matured for roughly eighteen to twenty six months in French oak barrels, most of them new.
Rieussec is one of the richer, more opulent wines of the appellation. Apricot, marmalade and candied orange are joined by honey, vanilla, ginger and toasted nuts, with a viscous texture held in balance by fresh acidity. It drinks well young and develops beautifully over decades.
