A colheita is a tawny Port drawn from a single harvest and aged for many years in seasoned oak casks rather than in bottle. Graham's released this one under the name First Flight to mark the centenary of powered flight, 1903 to 2003. Peter and Charles Symington set aside the finest lots from an excellent Douro harvest for long term cask ageing, and the wine has spent decades in wood since.
In the glass it still holds a deep crimson centre, ringed by the orange-brown rim that only long cask ageing produces. The wine combines opulence with grace, layering dried fruit, caramel and nutty, spiced complexity over a smooth, mellow palate of real length.
Serve it lightly chilled. It is a natural partner for dark chocolate, caramel or vanilla based desserts, and works just as well as a dessert in its own right.
