Château Mont-Redon is one of the largest and most historic estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, perched on the high plateau north-west of the village where deep beds of the appellation's famous galets roulés cover sand and red clay. The classique red is a traditional multi-varietal Châteauneuf blend anchored by Grenache, with substantial Syrah, Mourvèdre and a supporting cast of permitted varieties.
Now showing the early benefits of bottle age, the 2019 is rich and quietly refined. Red and dark cherry fruit are layered with tobacco leaf, liquorice, smoky garrigue and a touch of cured-meat savouriness. The palate is full-bodied yet silky, with ripe, supple tannins and a long, mineral-tinged finish that brings everything together with poise.
Drinking beautifully now and over the next decade; pair with herb-crusted lamb, slow-cooked daube, game stews or aged hard cheeses.
