Château d'Yquem 1er Cru Supérieur Sauternes 2020 750ml

Château d'Yquem is the singular Premier Cru Supérieur of Sauternes — a rank awarded to no other estate in the 1855 Classification. The 103-hectare vineyard sits on the highest hill in Sauternes, where gravel topsoils over clay and limestone combine with mists from the Ciron river to create the ideal conditions for Botrytis cinerea. Owned by LVMH since 1999 and managed by Pierre Lurton.

Typically a blend of around 75% Sémillon and 25% Sauvignon Blanc. Yquem is the benchmark for great sweet wine — expect intensely aromatic candied citrus, apricot, honey and exotic spice, with a palate of extraordinary concentration, depth and length, balanced by bright acidity. The 2020 is characteristically pure and refined, and will reward very long cellaring.

Harvest takes place over a period of weeks, with dozens of pickers making multiple passes through the vineyard to select only fully botrytised fruit. Fermentation takes place in new French oak, with barrel maturation for approximately 30 months before bottling.
