Château d'Yquem is the only estate ever awarded Premier Cru Supérieur status in the 1855 Classification, a rank held alone and above the other First Growths of Sauternes. Its vineyard sits on a rise at Sauternes where the cool Ciron meets the warmer Garonne, the meeting that produces the autumn mists on which the wine depends.
Sémillon makes up around three quarters of the plantings with Sauvignon Blanc the remainder. Pickers pass through the vines repeatedly over several weeks, taking only berries fully affected by noble rot, so yields are famously tiny. The wine is then raised for about two years in new French oak, and in years when the result does not meet the standard, no grand vin is released at all.
Yquem is extraordinarily concentrated yet never heavy. Apricot, candied citrus, quince and honey are layered with saffron, vanilla and toasted nuts, and the sweetness is carried by a line of acidity that keeps the long finish fresh. It is among the longest lived wines in the world, evolving over many decades in bottle.
