Château Coutet is one of Barsac's most celebrated estates, classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Classification and owned by the Baly family since 1977. The 38.5-hectare vineyard sits on a mosaic of sand, red clay, gravel and limestone soils, and is one of the cooler terroirs of the appellation — a defining character of the estate's wines.
The 2016 vintage was an exceptional one for Barsac, with ideal conditions for the development of Botrytis cinerea. Made from a blend of roughly 75% Sémillon, 23% Sauvignon Blanc and 2% Muscadelle, the wine shows apricot, honey and ripe tropical fruit on the nose, with delicate floral and citrus lift. The palate is richly layered with candied orange peel, pineapple and honeyed almond, finishing long, luscious and vibrantly fresh.
Grapes are hand-harvested in successive selective passes to pick only the botrytised berries. Gentle pressing is followed by fermentation and maturation in oak barrels, adding texture and subtle spice to the finished wine.
