Château Coutet is one of the oldest and most historic estates in Barsac, classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Classification. The property has been in the hands of the Baly family since 1977, who enlisted the team at Château Mouton Rothschild to assist with winemaking in its modern era. With 38.5 hectares under vine, Coutet is the largest vineyard in Barsac, and its cooler terroir gives the wines a trademark freshness alongside their richness.
A sweet white blend of approximately 75% Sémillon, 23% Sauvignon Blanc and 2% Muscadelle, grown on a patchwork of sand, red clay, gravel and limestone soils over 48 parcels. The 2015 Coutet is pale lemon-gold with intense aromas of grapefruit, lemon pie, pineapple and honeycomb, framed by crushed-rock minerality, orange blossom and a touch of lime zest. The palate is rich and opulent yet remarkably fresh, with a long, layered finish.
Harvested entirely by hand in successive passes to pick only the grapes affected by Botrytis cinerea at their peak. Gentle pressing is followed by fermentation and ageing in oak barrels, giving the wine additional depth, spice and vanilla nuances while preserving acidity and lift.
