Château Angélus stands on the south facing côte just below the village of Saint-Émilion, where clay and limestone slopes catch the afternoon sun. The name comes from a corner of the vineyard where the angelus bells of three nearby churches could be heard ringing at once, and a golden bell has become the estate's emblem.
The property covers around 39 hectares, with Merlot and Cabernet Franc in close to equal measure and a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon. The unusually high share of Cabernet Franc is a hallmark of the house. Parcels are picked and vinified separately, and the wine is matured for up to eighteen months in French oak with a generous proportion of new barrels.
Angélus is rich and dramatic in style: black cherry, blackberry and plum with violets, mocha, liquorice and toasty spice, built on ripe, plush tannins and a long, warming finish. It shows well relatively early and has the concentration to develop for twenty years and more.
