Au Bout du Chemin, "at the end of the path", comes from Vertus, the southernmost of the Côte des Blancs villages and a premier cru with a character all its own. The slope here turns more south-easterly and the chalk sits deeper beneath a heavier topsoil, which gives Chardonnay from Vertus a rounder, riper profile than the grand crus further north without losing the mineral line.
The aromatics lead with ripe citrus, white peach and acacia, backed by toasted almond and a light note of pastry. The palate is fuller and more approachable than a Mesnil blanc de blancs, with fine mousse and a creamy middle, before an extra brut finish pulls everything dry and chalky.
Girard-Bonnet is run from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger by Paul Girard, who brought together his father's holdings in Le Mesnil and his mother's in Oger under one name. The estate covers about 12 hectares across the Côte des Blancs, including these premier cru parcels in Vertus.
