Arran Signature Series 3 Duero Discovery is the third release in the Isle of Arran distillery's Signature Series, an unpeated island single malt created to showcase the influence of an extended Spanish red wine maturation. The whisky was first matured in ex-bourbon barrels before being re-racked into first-fill Spanish red wine casks drawn from the Duero River region, where it spent an unusually long finishing period that draws out layers of dark fruit while keeping Arran's bright distillery character intact.
The nose opens with caramelised fruits, raspberry and redcurrant, Seville orange and citrus zest, lifted by toasted oak, hazelnut and burnt caramel. The palate is full-bodied and lively, with dark red berries, blackcurrant, candied strawberry, creamy vanilla and a thread of coffee, ginger and sweet spice that stays generous without turning cloying. A medium to long finish carries strawberry, oak char and a touch of black pepper over soft vanilla.
This is an expressive, fruit-forward dram that rewards slow sipping, neat or with a few drops of water. It is a fine choice for enthusiasts who enjoy wine-cask matured single malts with depth and complexity.
