The small scale White Oak Distillery in Akashi is part of the Eigashima Shuzo company (founded in 1888), best known for its sake and shochu production. Given its history, it's not surprising that they've decided to mature whisky in x-sake barrels. These casks are relatively unusual (sake typically isn't aged for long, and when it is aged, it's rarely in oak). So, quite possibly Akashi are offering the only whisky in the world to have been aged in American oak x sake casks.
