Rosevears is the whisky arm of Turner Stillhouse, the Tamar Valley distillery in northern Tasmania that mills, mashes, distils and matures its whisky entirely on site using Tasmanian grain and water.
For this release the single malt is matured in ex-French oak casks that previously held Tasmanian pinot noir, a pairing that makes obvious sense given the valley's reputation for cool climate reds. The wine wood gives the whisky a richly layered, silky and full bodied character, with red fruit and a soft spice working through the malt.
Distinctly Tasmanian in both its grain and its casks, and a good demonstration of what happens when the state's whisky and wine sit in the same barrel.
