Wynns Coonawarra Estate's Single Vineyard series celebrates its standout sites, and this release is a landmark, the estate's first straight-varietal Cabernet Franc. The fruit comes from the MacKillop vineyard in Coonawarra's north, where a fine Bordeaux clone was planted in 2014 on the region's trademark terra rossa, and it makes a compelling case for the variety on this red earth.
This is a deep, generous take on Cabernet Franc. The nose is intense with blackcurrant and graphite lifted by star anise, mocha and a hint of sage. Inky and voluminous on the palate, it layers cassis and elderberry over a fine, chocolatey tannin structure and a savoury note of roasted nuts, closing long, mineral and balanced.
A characterful red for slow-cooked beef, venison or dishes with a little spice. Serve at cool room temperature, and decant if drinking young.
