Amelia is the cabernet blend from Wantirna Estate, the Egan family's single vineyard in the Yarra Valley, first planted by Reg Egan in 1963. Named after one of the family's granddaughters, it is built on cabernet sauvignon with merlot, cabernet franc and petit verdot, the proportions shifting each year according to what the vineyard gives.
The 2024 season shows in the wine's concentration, with a complex mix of berry fruits, generous weight and long tannins. It carries the elegance and finesse that are hallmarks of Amelia, drawn from vines around 60 years old.
The fruit is fermented in small open vats, hand plunged with occasional pump overs, with some batches given extended skin contact, before maturation in French oak. Quantities from 2024 were smaller than usual for this wine, and the family has described Amelia as a wine that ages very well.
