Weingut Wagner-Stempel is a leading Rheinhessen estate in the small, quiet village of Siefersheim, farmed by nine generations of the Wagner family and run today by Daniel Wagner. The estate farms around 20 hectares certified organic since 2008, with Riesling accounting for roughly 50% of plantings. Daniel has been pivotal in elevating Siefersheim's steep, volcanic Heerkretz and Höllberg sites to supra-regional importance.
The Siefersheimer Riesling Porphyr 2022 is drawn from declassified fruit from the Grosses Gewächs sites of Heerkretz (around three-quarters) and Höllberg (around one-quarter), effectively a 'little Grosses Gewächs'. The vineyards sit almost directly on porphyry — a volcanic rhyolite unique in Rheinhessen to the area around Siefersheim — which regulates water, stores warmth and delivers distinctive mineral character to the wine.
The wine shows aromas of peach and apricot with fresh herbal notes of mint and lemon balm. The palate is slim, filigreed and salty, with vibrant bracing acidity, an impressively stony mineral drive and remarkable length for the level.
