This Volnay Vieilles Vignes brings together five climats to the southeast of the village of Volnay: Les Blanches, Les Grands Champs, Les Pluchots, Les Pasquiers and Les Lurets. The Pinot Noir vines average around 65 years of age and grow on Bathonian limestone with brown loam, the kind of soil that gives Volnay its famously perfumed, refined style.
Grapes are hand-harvested and sorted in the vineyard and again at the winery, then mostly destemmed, with the proportion of whole bunches set by the vintage. A few days of cold maceration precede a temperature-controlled fermentation, and the wine is then aged for around 14 months in 228 litre barrels, roughly 30% new, before bottling according to the lunar calendar.
The nose offers violet, redcurrant, cherry and spice. On the palate it is fresh and lifted, with a gentle warmth on the finish. Serve it with lamb, game, red meats or a selection of cheeses.
Vincent Girardin established the house in 1980 from family roots in Santenay that reach back to the 17th century. It has been owned since 2012 by Jean-Pierre Nié of the Compagnie des Vins d'Autrefois, while winemaker Eric Germain continues to shape the wines from the cellar in Meursault.
