Troppo is the affordable, minimal-intervention label from Adelaide Hills winery Unico Zelo, founded by Brendan and Laura Carter. The name means 'too much' in Italian and the range is their answer to the agricultural excess of the wine industry, taking unsecured fruit from South Australia's wine regions and turning it into approachable, juicy wines using the same low-intervention winemaking approach as the core Unico Zelo range.
The Troppo Riesling is sourced from the Polish Hill River sub-region of the Clare Valley, one of Australia's great Riesling regions, with fruit farmed by the Jaeschke family at Hill River Estate — a team currently converting to biodynamic viticulture.
It is a bone-dry style with a decent lick of texture, showing white stone fruit, a litany of citrus and the slate signature that defines Polish Hill Riesling. Alcohol is around 11.5%, making it a fresh, vibrant and very drinkable take on the variety.
