Guidalberto is the second wine of Tenuta San Guido, the Bolgheri estate of the Incisa della Rocchetta family and the home of Sassicaia. Released for the first time with the 2000 vintage after more than twenty years of experimentation, it takes its name from Guidalberto della Gherardesca, an ancestor of the family remembered for his pioneering work on the estate.
The wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The estate's Merlot vineyards were planted in the early 1990s along the famous Viale dei Cipressi, chosen for their clay and silt-rich soils, and have since been joined by plots at different altitudes and exposures. In 2023 the harvest ran from early September to early October, beginning with the Merlot. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel without added commercial yeasts, with short macerations aimed at balance rather than sheer concentration, followed by maturation in French and American oak barriques.
The result is a polished, Bordeaux-inspired Tuscan red showing ripe blackcurrant, plum and dark cherry fruit with hints of Mediterranean herbs, cedar and spice. Fine-grained tannins and a fresh line of acidity give it real elegance, and while it is approachable relatively young, it also rewards time in the cellar.
