From Stefano Lubiana Wines, a family-run Tasmanian estate on the banks of the Derwent River at Granton, near Hobart. Steve and Monique Lubiana moved to Tasmania in 1990 and built a gravity-fed winery on the sloping site, establishing what is regarded as Tasmania's first certified biodynamic vineyard, with biodynamic methods in use since 2010. Steve, a fifth-generation winegrower, now works alongside his son Marco.
Il Giardino, Italian for 'the garden', is one of three single-block Pinot Noirs in the family's premium range. The block sits at 60 to 80 metres elevation on heavy silty black clay topsoil over clay, with patches of chalky limestone, and the vines are over 15 years old. The soil produces a Pinot of more structure and tighter acid and tannin profiles than its neighbouring blocks. Expect a perfumed, ageworthy Tasmanian Pinot Noir with dark cherry, blue fruits, rose, clove, cardamom and earthy spice on a deep, tannin-laced palate carried by cool-climate acidity.
Certified biodynamic, hand-harvested, with wild fermentation, judicious use of whole bunches and gentle, gravity-led handling in the cellar.
