Samuel Billaud is considered to be one of the select few outstanding producers in Chablis. Testament to this is Samuel’s ability to bring out the unique characteristics of each of his fantastic terroirs. His wines have a distinctive elegance, balance and complexity that is seldom achieved with such precision. The Séchet is from an old vineyard that belonged to Samuel’s great grandmother. The vines are 70 years old on average and located on the left bank which is part of the 1er cru “Vaillons”.
Made from 90 year old vines, the Séchets Vieilles Vignes is raised only in tank for 18 months. Very backward indeed, and really concentrated. Exceptionally tight, a concentrated confit of lemons, nothing too opulent. This is still ridiculously young, but I am sure will emerge as a great wine when it wants to. The finish suggests lemon rinsed Granny Smith apples. Drink from 2028-2038. 92-96 points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy. 100% Chardonnay.
