Domaine Saint Damien's home appellation is Gigondas, the southern Rhône village famously sheltered beneath the jagged Dentelles de Montmirail. The Vieilles Vignes is the estate's classique bottling, drawn from old Grenache and Mourvèdre vines on the rocky terraces around the village, fermented in concrete and aged in large old foudres to keep the focus on fruit and place.
The 2023 is built on roughly 80% Grenache with Mourvèdre filling in depth and grip. Aromas of dark berries, black cherry and liquorice are layered with sappy garrigue, cracked pepper and a hint of smoked meat. The palate is medium to full-bodied with a pure, polished mouthfeel, fine-grained tannins and well-integrated acidity carrying through a long, peppery close.
A natural match for slow-braised lamb shoulder, daube de boeuf, herb-roasted vegetables or aged hard cheeses.
