Prophet's Rock is a Central Otago estate founded in 1999 in the Bendigo sub-region, taking its name from a local landmark at the claim of pioneering goldminer Bob Prophet. Winemaker Paul Pujol joined in 2005 bringing experience from Alsace, Sancerre and Burgundy.
Cuvée aux Antipodes is a collaboration between Pujol and François Millet, the former winemaker at Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé for 35 vintages. The 2022 Chardonnay, the fifth release of this partnership, comes exclusively from the small one-hectare Chardonnay block on the Kopuwai Delta vineyard in the Pisa sub-region, on a flat terrace of schist and river stone/fine gravel at around 225 metres elevation.
Hand-picked and whole-bunch pressed with the combined press and free-run juice blended pre-ferment, the must is settled and racked off heavy lees before going into barrel. Primary fermentation finishes by spring, followed by 17 months in barrel with no bâtonnage, racked off fine lees after 10 months and given a second winter in wood. The 2022 shows white floral aromas, white peach, mandarin, brioche and macadamia, with a stony acidity and oyster-shell minerality leading to a long, graceful finish.
