Poderi Aldo Conterno is one of the founding names of modern Barolo, with the Cicala parcel sitting at the heart of the storied Bussia cru in Monforte d'Alba. Aldo Conterno purchased the Bussia Soprana property in the late 1960s, and his single-vineyard interpretations of Cicala, Colonnello and Romirasco helped establish the cru-bottled approach that now defines fine Barolo.
The Cicala vineyard is the cooler of the family's three Bussia parcels, planted on calcareous clay soils that lend a particular fruit intensity and tannic energy to the resulting wine. Nebbiolo is hand-harvested, vinified gently and aged in large Slavonian oak casks for around two years before release, in keeping with the family's traditionally minded house style.
The wine shows perfumed aromas of Parma violet, fresh cherry, dark plum, liquorice, roasted hazelnut and a touch of graphite. The palate is full bodied and intensely structured, with bright acidity, ripe but insistent tannins and a long, mineral-driven finish that rewards a decade or more in the cellar.
