Mount Mary Marli Russell RP1 2021 750ml
Marli Russell is Mount Mary's second label, named for the grandmother of the Middleton family who founded the estate in the Yarra Valley. RP1 is the white in the range, a blend of roughly forty per cent Marsanne, forty per cent Roussanne and twenty per cent Clairette, three Rhone varieties that suit the Yarra's cool conditions far better than most expect.
The winemaking is deliberately textural. The fruit is pressed relatively hard, fermented in barrel and left on lees with regular stirring, which builds the weight and depth that carry the wine without needing obvious oak flavour.
The nose is fragrant and precise, with lemon zest, white peach and dried apricot lifted by a delicate note of fennel, plus a little honey and mandarin. The palate is taut and mineral driven, with bright citrus, guava and kaffir lime leaf, an anise edge and a distinctive oyster shell salinity running to the finish. A wine with genuine presence at the table, and one that pairs well with roast chicken, richer seafood or Middle Eastern spice.
