Maxwell Wines Nero d'Avola 2023 750ml

Maxwell Wines is a family-owned estate on Olivers Road in McLaren Vale, also known for its meadery and its acclaimed restaurant. Alongside Shiraz and Grenache, the family grows Mediterranean varieties such as Nero d'Avola on its limestone ridge, where the region's warm, maritime climate suits the grape well.

Nero d'Avola is Sicily's signature red variety, and Maxwell's version is vibrant and juicy. Picked in the cool of the morning and fermented on skins with gentle pump-overs and plunging, it is mostly matured in tank with a small portion in neutral oak to keep the fruit bright. Expect a medium ruby colour with purple hues and aromas of black forest berries, blood plum and cherry over cocoa, liquorice and savoury spice. The palate carries dark fruit and spice, with crisp acidity, soft, juicy tannins and a long finish.

Made to be enjoyed young, it is a natural match for wood-fired pizza, charcuterie and game dishes such as venison.
