Maxwell Wines is a family-owned McLaren Vale producer founded in 1979, and the Ellen Street Shiraz is its signature wine. It comes from a small block of gnarled, dry-grown Shiraz vines planted in 1953 on the soils of an old riverbed, sitting at the front of the property between the winery and Ellen Street, the road that runs along its southern boundary.
These old vines yield tiny crops of concentrated fruit, which is matured in a combination of American and French oak hogsheads. The result is a rich, generous expression of McLaren Vale Shiraz that balances power with polish.
Aromas of blackberry, liquorice and dark chocolate are lifted by sweet vanillin oak, leading to a weighty, full-bodied palate of ripe dark fruit, spice and plush, fine-grained tannins. It can be cellared for several years.
