Le Petit Ducru de Ducru-Beaucaillou comes from the Saint-Julien stable of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, the Second Growth that sits on the gravel bank overlooking the Gironde. It is the estate's most approachable label, introduced in place of Lalande Borie, which was made for the last time in 2018.
Cabernet Sauvignon leads the blend in the house style, with Merlot filling out the middle and a little Petit Verdot for spice. Barrel maturation is shorter and uses less new oak than the senior wines, which keeps the fruit bright and the tannins supple.
The result is a fresh, immediate Saint-Julien: blackcurrant and dark cherry with cedar, graphite and a touch of violet, medium bodied with smooth tannins and a clean finish. It is made to be enjoyed young and serves as a fine introduction to the estate's style.
