Château Cantemerle sits at Macau in the southern Haut-Médoc, where its vineyards wrap around a château set in a large wooded park. The estate was the last property added to the 1855 Classification, taking its place among the Fifth Growths, and it farms around 90 hectares on the deep gravel soils that run through Macau and Ludon.
Cabernet Sauvignon leads the plantings and the blend, supported by Merlot with smaller parcels of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Many of the Cabernet vines are well over 60 years old. The wine is matured in French oak barrels, a portion of them new, for a little over a year before bottling.
Cantemerle is known for finesse rather than force. In its youth it shows cherry, darker black fruits and a floral lift of rose petal and violet, with Petit Verdot adding a fine thread of spice. The tannins are silky and enveloping, the texture rich yet fresh, and with cellar age the wine turns towards undergrowth, blond tobacco and black tea.
