From Kumeu River — New Zealand's most Burgundian Chardonnay producer — Rays Road is sourced from a newer vineyard site on a limestone hillside at 180 metres elevation in Hawke's Bay, North Island. The site is dry-farmed on chalky soils that give the wine a taut, mineral character quite distinct from the estate's Auckland-based bottlings.
Whole-bunch pressed and fermented with wild yeasts in older French oak, this Chardonnay sits at a restrained 12.8% ABV. The result is a focused, mineral-driven wine with remarkable freshness and precision — a compelling expression of New Zealand terroir through a decidedly Burgundian lens.
