Alongside their Clare Valley vineyards, Damon and Maddy Koerner farm a home block at Lenswood in the Adelaide Hills, where the altitude and cooler air suit Chardonnay far better than the warmer country to the north. This is their Adelaide Hills bottling of the variety.
Koerner Wine began in 2014 and has become one of the most followed small labels in South Australia, largely on the strength of a philosophy that puts fruit quality first and keeps the winemaking transparent. The Chardonnay is handled gently and made in a restrained style, with the aim of texture and drive rather than obvious oak or worked richness.
The result is fresh and finely drawn. White peach, nectarine and citrus sit over a subtle flinty note and a touch of oatmeal, and the palate is lean and energetic with a long, savoury finish. Serve it with roast chicken, seafood or a creamy pasta, and give it a little time in the glass to open up.
