Les Gaudoirs is a vineyard on a limestone plateau in the cooler, higher southern part of Rully in the Côte Chalonnaise. Jean-Marc Pillot's cuvée comes from a parcel of mature Chardonnay vines planted in extremely stony, pebbly soils, which keep yields in check and give the wine its mineral drive.
The style is crystalline and stylish, with lemon, green apple and white peach, electric acidity and a salty, palate-staining minerality on the finish. Oak plays a supporting role, with only a small share of new barrels and the final months of ageing in vat to preserve freshness.
Domaine Jean-Marc Pillot is a family estate in Chassagne-Montrachet. Jean-Marc, the fourth generation of Pillots to make wine there, has run it since 1991 and is now joined by his son Antonin. Their Rully offers the same precise, transparent house style as the Chassagne wines at a more approachable level.
