Jean-Luc Jamet farms in Ampuis in the Northern Rhone, having struck out on his own in 2013 after many years working the family holdings alongside his brother. This Cote du Rhone, named L'Enclave, comes from a parcel of Syrah set within the boundaries of the Cote-Rotie appellation, and it has long been regarded as something of a baby Cote-Rotie.
Made entirely from Syrah, the fruit is destemmed and vinified in barrel. The wine is deep purple in the glass, with expressive aromas of black cherry, violet, flint and woodsmoke. The palate is plush and generous, with rich dark fruit framed by tender, fine-grained tannins.
Decant and serve at a cool room temperature with grilled lamb, peppered steak, sausages or hearty stews. Approachable young, it carries the savoury signature of the Northern Rhone.
