In Praise of Shadows is a boutique McLaren Vale label founded in 2018 by Brett Trewartha, with consultant winemaker Rob Mack (of Aphelion Wine Co. and a two-time Young Gun of Wine awardee) joining in 2019. The name is drawn from Junichirō Tanizaki's 1933 essay on Japanese aesthetics, and the wines are built around wabi-sabi — embracing simplicity, natural energy and a sense of place.
A McLaren Vale Shiraz in the label's signature modern, light-footed style — sourced from elevated, cooler-climate sites in the Vale's upper reaches and the Adelaide Hills. Expect a fine-boned, floral, Mediterranean-accented Shiraz with aromas of dark berry and spice, lifted perfume and a silky, textural palate defined by powdery tannins and fresh acidity.
Minimal-intervention winemaking: hand-picked fruit, lo-fi cellar work, unfined and unfiltered. Many of the source vineyards are farmed organically or biodynamically, and the wines are vegan-friendly.
